Konjunktiv II (wäre/hätte)

Wäre means would be and hätte means would have — they are the Konjunktiv II forms of sein and haben, and German uses them instead of würde sein or würde haben. They appear in wenn-clauses with the verb at the end (Wenn ich reich wäre) and in main clauses for wishes and polite offers (Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee).

Konjunktiv II wäre hätte Introduction

Einführung: Konjunktiv II wäre und hätte

If I were rich... If I had more time... For sein and haben, German does not use würde! Instead, use wäre (would be) and hätte (would have).

würde sein sounds wrong! Use wäre instead. würde haben sounds wrong! Use hätte instead. These are the most important Konjunktiv II forms!

English: I would be, I would have. Also: If I were (subjunctive form of to be).

Why you need this Hypotheticals: If I were you... If I had time... Wishes: I wish I were... I wish I had...

Wenn ich reich wäre, hätte ich ein großes Haus.

If I were rich, I would have a big house.

wäre = would be / were. hätte = would have.

wäre and hätte are the most common Konjunktiv II forms. You cannot speak German hypothetically without them!

Modal Verbs Have Special Forms Too

Modalverben haben auch Sonderformen

Modal verbs also have their own Konjunktiv II: könnte (could), müsste (would have to), sollte (should). Do not say würde können!

Modalverben haben auch eigene Konjunktiv II Formen: könnte, müsste, sollte. Nicht würde können!

Example

I could help.

Ich könnte helfen. (not: Ich würde können helfen.)

sollte, müsste, dürfte, könnte: Giving Advice Politely

sollte, müsste, dürfte, könnte: höflich raten

These forms sound more polite than the imperative. They are common in the Sprechen Teil 3 exam task and in a semi-formal letter.

Diese Formen wirken höflicher als der Imperativ. Im Sprechen Teil 3 und im halbformellen Brief sind sie sehr üblich.

FormFunktionBeispiel
sollteRatschlag / EmpfehlungDu solltest das Formular vor dem Termin ausfüllen.
müssteeigentlich nötigIch müsste eigentlich noch die Anlage schicken.
dürftevorsichtige VermutungDas dürfte kein Problem sein.
könntehöflicher VorschlagSie könnten sich direkt beim Amt melden.

sollte, müsste, dürfte, könnte are all Konjunktiv II of modal verbs, used here for advice, not for hypotheticals.

sollte = should, müsste = really should, dürfte = probably, könnte = could — all softer than a direct command.

Common questions about wäre and hätte

What is the difference between wäre and würde?

Wäre is the Konjunktiv II of sein, so it already means would be and needs no würde. Würde plus infinitive is the general pattern for almost all other verbs. Say Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen — wäre for the sein part, würde for reisen. Wenn ich reich sein würde is considered clumsy.

How do I conjugate wäre and hätte?

Wäre goes ich wäre, du wärest or wärst, er/sie/es wäre, wir wären, ihr wäret or wärt, sie/Sie wären. Hätte goes ich hätte, du hättest, er/sie/es hätte, wir hätten, ihr hättet, sie/Sie hätten. In both, the ich and er forms are identical, and the umlaut is what marks them as Konjunktiv II.

How do I say if I were in German?

Use wenn plus wäre with the verb at the end of the clause: Wenn ich du wäre... (if I were you). The main clause then follows the comma with its verb first: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dir helfen. You can also drop wenn and start with the verb: Hätte ich Zeit, würde ich dir helfen.

What does ich hätte gern mean?

It means I would like and it is the polite, standard way to order or ask for something: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. It is softer than ich will and slightly more formal than ich möchte. In a café, restaurant or shop this phrase alone will carry most of your ordering needs.

Can I use wäre and hätte on their own without würde?

Yes, and you often should. Das wäre schön! is a complete Konjunktiv II sentence, as is Ich hätte Zeit. When the main clause is about being or having, wäre or hätte does the whole job — you only reach for würde when a different main verb needs the subjunctive.
