Common questions about zu plus infinitive

When do I use zu before an infinitive in German?

Use it after verbs and expressions that introduce a second action, such as versuchen, hoffen, beginnen, aufhören, vergessen and vorhaben, and after impersonal phrases like es ist wichtig or es ist schwer. Ich hoffe, dich bald zu sehen. The zu and the infinitive always sit together at the end of the clause.

Where does zu go with separable verbs?

It goes inside the verb, between the separable prefix and the stem: anrufen becomes anzurufen, aufstehen becomes aufzustehen, einkaufen becomes einzukaufen. So you say Vergiss nicht, mich anzurufen! and Es ist schwer, früh aufzustehen. Writing zu anrufen as two words is one of the most common learner errors here.

Which German verbs do not take zu?

The modal verbs — können, müssen, wollen, sollen, dürfen, mögen — never take zu: Ich kann Deutsch sprechen, not zu sprechen. The same applies to werden and to sehen, hören and lassen when they govern another verb: Ich höre ihn singen. Everything else that chains two verbs generally needs zu.

Do I need a comma before zu in German?

Modern German rules make the comma optional in short constructions but strongly recommend it when the zu-clause has its own objects or additions. Write Ich versuche, Deutsch zu lernen with a comma; Sie hört auf zu rauchen is fine without one. Using the comma whenever the clause carries extra words is the safest habit.

What is the difference between zu plus infinitive and dass?

Use zu plus infinitive when both actions share the same subject: Ich hoffe, dich zu sehen. Use a dass-clause when the subjects differ: Ich hoffe, dass du kommst. English blurs this with I hope to see you versus I hope you come, so checking who does what decides the German structure.
