Nominalization

Any infinitive becomes a capitalized neuter noun with das, as in das Lesen, adjectives become neuter nouns with an -e ending, as in das Schöne, and many verbs form feminine nouns in -ung, such as die Entwicklung.

Common questions about German nominalization
What is nominalization in German?
It is the process of using a verb or an adjective as a noun. Lesen becomes das Lesen, reading, and schön becomes das Schöne, the beautiful thing. Nominalized words are always capitalized and take an article. German uses this constantly in academic writing, official documents and abstract discussion.
What gender is a nominalized infinitive in German?
Always neuter, and always with das. das Lesen, das Schwimmen, das Arbeiten, das Reisen and das Lernen all follow the same pattern. Because it names the activity itself, it has no plural. A typical sentence is Das Lesen macht mir Spaß, meaning reading is fun for me.
How do you turn a German adjective into a noun?
Capitalize it and add the adjective ending required by the article. With das you get -e: schön gives das Schöne, gut gives das Gute, neu gives das Neue, wichtig gives das Wichtige. Example: Das Schöne an der Stadt ist die Altstadt. Superlatives work too, as in Ich habe das Wichtigste vergessen.
Are German -ung nouns always feminine?
Yes, without exception. die Entwicklung, die Hoffnung, die Überraschung, die Bedeutung, die Erklärung and die Lösung are all feminine. The suffix attaches to a verb stem and names the action or its result, so it is one of the most reliable gender rules in the whole language.
When should you use nominalization in German?
Use it for formal, abstract or academic style, where German prefers nouns to verbs: Die Entwicklung der Wirtschaft ist positiv. In conversation the plain verb usually sounds better. Overusing nominalization creates the heavy bureaucratic tone Germans call Nominalstil, so keep verbal phrasing for anything meant to sound natural.
