Advanced Conjunctions

Erweiterte Konjunktionen

Advanced German conjunctions such as zumal, sofern, falls, indem, obgleich and wenngleich refine the relationship between clauses far more precisely than weil and obwohl. Nearly all of them are subordinating, so they push the finite verb to the end of the clause, as in Er hilft gern, zumal er Zeit hat.

Common questions about advanced German conjunctions

What does zumal mean in German?

zumal means especially since or all the more so because. It introduces a reason that reinforces something already stated: Er hilft gern, zumal er Zeit hat, meaning he gladly helps, especially since he has time. It is subordinating, so the finite verb goes to the end of its clause.

What is the difference between sofern and falls?

sofern means provided that and frames a positive condition that must hold: Sofern das Wetter gut ist, gehen wir wandern. falls means in case or if and frames a mere possibility: Falls du Hilfe brauchst, ruf an. Both send the verb to the end, but sofern sounds noticeably more formal.

How do you say unless in German?

Use es sei denn. It marks an exception: Ich komme, es sei denn, ich bin krank, meaning I will come unless I am sick. Unlike most conjunctions here, it keeps main clause word order with the verb in second position. A more formal option is außer wenn, which does send the verb to the end.

What does indem mean in German?

indem expresses the means by which something happens and translates as by doing something. Er lernt schnell, indem er viel liest means he learns quickly by reading a lot. The verb goes to the end. Do not confuse it with in dem, written as two words, which is a preposition plus a relative pronoun.

Which German conjunctions mean although?

obwohl is the everyday choice. obgleich is formal, obschon is literary, wenngleich means even though in written style, and wenn auch means even if. All of them are subordinating: Obgleich es regnet, gehen wir. Choosing among them is a matter of register rather than meaning.
