Register & Style
Register und Stil
German has three broad registers: colloquial Umgangssprache, neutral Standardsprache and formal gehobene Sprache, and choosing the wrong one can make you sound rude or stiff. Haste mal nen Euro, Hast du einen Moment Zeit and Hätten Sie einen Augenblick Zeit für mich all ask the same thing at three different social distances.
Distinguish formal vs. informal German.

Common questions about German register and style
What are the registers of German?
Three. Umgangssprache is casual speech with friends and family, marked by contractions, modal particles and slang. Standardsprache is neutral, grammatically correct German for the general public. Gehobene Sprache is formal German for business, academic and official contexts, using Sie, complex structures and elevated vocabulary.
What is the difference between kriegen and bekommen?
They mean the same thing, to get or receive, but sit at different levels. kriegen is colloquial, bekommen is standard, and erhalten is formal. The same ladder shows up elsewhere: kapieren, verstehen, nachvollziehen; checken, prüfen, überprüfen; and mega or voll, sehr, äußerst.
Is weil with main clause word order wrong in German?
It is non-standard but extremely common in speech. Many Germans say weil ich hab keine Zeit with the verb in second position. In writing and any formal context you must use subordinate order: weil ich keine Zeit habe. Treat the spoken version as something to recognise, not something to imitate in exams.
When should you use the genitive in German?
In standard and formal German, especially in writing: das Auto meines Vaters. Colloquially most speakers replace it with von plus dative, das Auto von meinem Vater. Both are understood, but the genitive signals education and care, so it belongs in essays, reports and professional correspondence.
How do you make a German request more polite?
Move up the register and into Konjunktiv II. Hast du Zeit becomes Haben Sie Zeit with the formal pronoun, and then Hätten Sie einen Augenblick Zeit für mich, which adds hypothetical distance. Longer, less direct wording reads as more respectful, exactly the opposite of the clipped Haste mal nen Euro.
