Passive Voice Present Introduction

Einführung: Passiv Präsens

The book IS READ. The door IS OPENED. When the action matters more than WHO does it, use passive voice! German passive uses werden + past participle.

German passive: werden (conjugated) + past participle (at the end). Das Auto wird gewaschen. Die Briefe werden geschrieben.

English passive: is/are + past participle. The car is washed. The letters are written.

Why you need this Instructions, processes, news reports: The building is constructed. The law is passed. Breakfast is served.

Das Auto wird gewaschen. / Die Tür wird geöffnet.

The car is being washed. / The door is being opened.

werden = is being. Past participle (gewaschen, geöffnet) at the END.

Passive voice is common in formal writing, news, and when the doer is unknown or unimportant.

werden is conjugated, past participle stays the same and goes to the END.

Passive = werden (conjugated) + past participle (at end). Same werden as future tense!

werden + Partizip II = passive. Same werden as future, but with participle instead of infinitive!

Common Mistakes

✗ Das Auto werde gewaschen.

✓ Das Auto wird gewaschen.

das Auto = es = 3rd person singular → wird, not werde.

Active vs. Passive

Aktiv vs. Passiv

Active: subject does the action. Passive: subject receives the action.

Der Mann wäscht das Auto.	Das Auto wird gewaschen.	Focus shifts to das Auto
Die Firma baut das Haus.	Das Haus wird gebaut.	Focus shifts to das Haus
Man spricht hier Deutsch.	Hier wird Deutsch gesprochen.	Focus on the action

Active: WHO does it. Passive: WHAT happens (doer less important or unknown).

Passive = something IS DONE. The object becomes the subject!

Common Mistakes

✗ Das Auto wird waschen.

✓ Das Auto wird gewaschen.

Passive needs PAST PARTICIPLE (gewaschen), not infinitive (waschen)!

Adding the Agent with von + Dative

Agens mit von + Dativ

To say BY WHOM, use von + dative: von dem Lehrer, von mir, von der Firma.

Without Agent	With Agent (von + Dative)
Das Buch wird gelesen.	Das Buch wird von dem Lehrer gelesen.
Die Arbeit wird gemacht.	Die Arbeit wird von mir gemacht.
Das Haus wird gebaut.	Das Haus wird von der Firma gebaut.

von + dative = by whom. Das Buch wird VON DEM LEHRER gelesen = by the teacher.

by the man = von dem Mann. by me = von mir. von + dative!

Common Mistakes

✗ Das Buch wird von der Lehrer gelesen.

✓ Das Buch wird von dem Lehrer gelesen.

von takes DATIVE! der Lehrer → von DEM Lehrer.

Impersonal Passive (es wird)

Unpersönliches Passiv

es wird + participle for general activities. Common for rules and descriptions.

German	English	Use
Es wird getanzt.	There is dancing. / Dancing is happening.	general activity
Hier wird nicht geraucht.	There is no smoking here.	rules/signs
Es wird viel gearbeitet.	There is a lot of working.	general statement

es wird + participle = general activity happening. Hier wird nicht geraucht = No smoking here.

Es wird getanzt = Dancing is happening (in general). Very common in German!
