I wonder WHERE he is. Do you know WHAT time it is? These are indirect questions — questions inside statements. German has special word order rules for these!

German indirect questions: verb goes to the END! Ich weiß nicht, wo er IST. Kannst du mir sagen, wie spät es IST?

English: I wonder where he is. Can you tell me what time it is? The question is embedded in a statement.

Why you need this Polite questions, expressing uncertainty, reporting what someone asked.

Ich weiß nicht, wo er ist. / Kannst du mir sagen, wie spät es ist?

I do not know where he is. / Can you tell me what time it is?

The verb (ist) goes to the END of the indirect question!

Indirect questions sound more polite and are very common in everyday German.

W-Fragewörter in indirekten Fragen

W-words (wo, was, wann, warum, wie, wer) introduce indirect questions. Verb goes to END!

Indirect question = subordinate clause. W-word + subject + ... + VERB AT END!

Common Mistakes

✗ Ich weiß nicht, wo ist er.

✓ Ich weiß nicht, wo er ist.

In indirect questions, verb goes to END: wo er IST, not wo IST er.

Yes/No Questions: Use ob

Ja/Nein-Fragen: ob benutzen

For yes/no questions (no W-word), use OB (if/whether). Verb still goes to END!

No W-word? Use OB! Kommt er? → Ich weiß nicht, OB er kommt.

✗ Ich weiß nicht, kommt er.

✓ Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.

Yes/no questions need ob! And verb goes to end.

These phrases introduce indirect questions. Very useful for polite requests!

Er fragt, ...	He asks ...	Er fragt, ob du Zeit hast.

Polite = indirect! Kannst du mir sagen, wo...? sounds softer than Wo ist...?

Indirect Questions with Modal Verbs

Indirekte Fragen mit Modalverben

With modals, the modal verb goes to the END (after the infinitive).

Wo muss ich unterschreiben?	Fragen Sie, wo Sie unterschreiben müssen.	modal at end

Modal verbs also go to end: ...was ich machen SOLL, ...ob er schwimmen KANN.

Punctuation: No Question Mark!

Zeichensetzung: Kein Fragezeichen!
