In English, you say not or no. In German, there are TWO words: nicht and kein. They are NOT the same! Using the wrong one is a very common mistake.

German has nicht (= not) and kein (= no / not a). The rule is simple: use kein when you negate a noun with ein/eine. Use nicht for everything else.

In English, not goes after the verb: I do not speak German. No goes before a noun: I have no time. Simple.

Why you need this You need negation every day: I do not understand. I have no time. That is not correct. She is not here.

Ich spreche nicht Deutsch. / Ich habe kein Auto.

Simple rule: Does it have ein/eine? → Use kein. Everything else? → Use nicht.

The rule is simple: kein replaces ein/eine before nouns. nicht is used for everything else (verbs, adjectives, places).

✓ Ich habe kein Auto.

Auto had ein (ein Auto). To negate, replace ein with kein: kein Auto.
✗ Ich spreche kein Deutsch.

✓ Ich spreche nicht Deutsch.

Deutsch has no article (not ein Deutsch). So use nicht, not kein.
✗ Das ist kein gut.

✓ Das ist nicht gut.

gut is an adjective, not a noun. Use nicht before adjectives.

kein follows gender rules

kein = ein with k in front! Same gender rules: kein (masc/neut), keine (fem/plural).
