Understand German word order and verb position
Rules & Explanations
German Sentence Structure
Deutscher Satzbau
Here's the golden rule of German: THE VERB IS ALWAYS IN SECOND POSITION. Not the second word — the second POSITION. Once you understand this, German word order suddenly makes sense. Verbs in German are stubborn — they refuse to move from position 2.
German lets you move things around for emphasis, BUT the conjugated verb stays locked in position 2. This is non-negotiable. 'Ich esse einen Apfel' OR 'Einen Apfel esse ich' — the verb 'esse' is always second.
English uses strict Subject-Verb-Object order: 'I eat an apple.' German is more flexible — you can start with different elements — but the verb MUST stay in position 2.
Ich lerne Deutsch. / Deutsch lerne ich.
I learn German. / German learn I. (emphasis on German)
Word order in German signals meaning and emphasis. Put the verb in the wrong position, and your sentence sounds broken. Master position 2, and you sound natural.

Sentence Position Chart
Satzposition-Tabelle
| Position 1 | Position 2 (VERB) | Position 3+ | End |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ich | esse | einen Apfel | — |
| Morgen | fliege | ich | nach Berlin |
| In Berlin | wohne | ich | — |
| Deutsch | lerne | ich | gern |
| Das Buch | lese | ich | heute |
Position 1 is flexible. Position 2 is ALWAYS the verb. Everything else follows.
Think: Position 1 = ? / Position 2 = VERB (always!) / Position 3+ = everything else
What Can Go in Position 1?
Was kann an Position 1 stehen?
Position 1 holds exactly ONE element — but that element can be a whole phrase like 'In der großen Stadt.'
ONE thing before the verb. Could be one word (Ich) or a phrase (In der Stadt).
Why Use Different Word Orders?
Warum verschiedene Wortstellungen?
Position 1 = spotlight. Whatever goes there gets emphasized.
Want to emphasize something? Put it first! But remember: verb stays in position 2.
