German Nouns & Gender
Deutsche Nomen und Genus
In German, every single noun has a gender — and it's often completely illogical. A girl (das Mädchen) is neuter, but a turnip (die Rübe) is feminine. Don't panic: there ARE patterns, and millions of people learn them. You will too.
German has THREE genders: masculine (der), feminine (die), and neuter (das). The gender affects articles, adjectives, and pronouns throughout every sentence. Get this wrong, and everything else breaks.
English used to have grammatical gender too (Old English had it!), but we lost it over time. Now we only use gender for people and animals (he/she). German kept the full system.
der Mann, die Frau, das Kind
the man, the woman, the child
Gender is the backbone of German grammar. Every article, adjective ending, and pronoun depends on it. Learning gender WITH each noun saves you massive headaches later.
