You learned der, die, das (= the). Now we learn ein and eine (= a / an). When do you use the book and when a book? The answer is the same in German and English!

In German, a changes based on gender: ein (masculine and neuter) and eine (feminine). There is no plural form — you cannot say a books in English or German.

In English, a or an = you talk about any one thing, not a specific thing. I have a dog (some dog). I need a pen (any pen). English has just one form: a/an.

Why you need this Use ein/eine when you talk about one thing that is not specific. I see a man (any man). She has a book (some book).

Masculine and neuter are both ein. Only feminine is different: eine.

You use ein/eine in almost every conversation. Getting it right makes a big difference!

Masculine and neuter are BOTH ein. Only feminine is different: eine. No plural form!

Mann is masculine → ein, not eine.

Katze is feminine → eine, not ein.

the vs. a — When to Use Which

der/die/das vs. ein/eine

Important: For jobs, German uses NO article! Sie ist Lehrerin, not Sie ist eine Lehrerin.

Wait — einen, not ein? This is the accusative! Masculine ein becomes einen after brauchen. You learn this in A1.2!
